Homelessness Declines in Michigan

August 13, 2012
Homelessness Declines in Michigan Efforts of Michigan Campaign, Community Partners Paying off Today, the leaders of Michigan’s Campaign to End Homelessness announced there were 6,143 fewer Michigan residents who were homeless for any part of 2011 than who were homeless during 2010. The Campaign focuses on preventing homelessness or, when that’s not possible, quickly finding housing solutions, while addressing the issues that led to the individual’s or family’s housing crisis.

Susan Clinthorne has a theory on why most people try their hardest to ignore the homeless and the panhandlers they see on the streets: “No one wants to think that it could happen to them," she said. “Another part of it is, when you see someone in trouble, you feel compelled to help. It’s easier not to when you can ignore that person.”

Paying it Forward: Two Counselors Who've Been There Help Others Avert Homelessness

In late July, on the verge of homelessness, Elmario Allen came to our Housing Resource Center needing help to pay his rent.  Now, just a few months later, Elmario, 27, is helping others from becoming homeless. Each one he interviews sits in the place he once occupied, seeking the assistance he once sought, expressing the worries he knows too well. And Elmario sits across from each, as his counselor - and now colleague - Sajjiah Parker once did from him.

During Homeless Awareness Month, Local Community Groups Help Veterans Prevent and End Homelessness

November 16, 2011

Michigan Repays Debt to Veterans With Housing Help As Veterans’ Day approaches, communities throughout Michigan are stepping up their efforts to help end or prevent homelessness for former members of the military. In Northern Michigan, homeless veterans from 29 counties are being welcomed to the new Patriots Place duplexes in Gaylord. The Volunteers of America in Detroit are celebrating the grand opening of transitional housing for 60 vets on Veterans’ Day. And in Battle Creek, Silver Star Apartments has 75 units offering housing and easy access to services for West Michigan’s vets.

New One-Stop Agencies Help Prevent, Shorten Homelessness

Housing Assessment and Resource Agencies (HARAs) are becoming the central, starting point for residents who are either homeless or at risk of it.

The Campaign to End Homelessness Makes a Difference for Homeless Students

As Michigan’s students prepare for a new school year, educators and leaders of the Campaign to End Homelessness are mindful that thousands of students will have no home to return to when classes are out for the day. Nearly 23,000 Michigan students were identified as homeless during the 2009-10 school year, according to the most recently available statistics.

Michiganders Recognize Homelessness as a Serious Problem in Their Communities

November 16, 2011

An overwhelming majority of residents across the state believe homelessness could happen to anyone, and many want their communities to do more to help their struggling friends and neighbors, according to a new poll commissioned by Michigan’s Campaign to End Homelessness. The survey found that 80% of Michigan voters agreed that regardless of the state of the economy, homelessness or the risk of it can happen to anyone. Statewide, only 11% believe that homelessness is a lifestyle choice, while 71% disagree.
