Charlene Kangas Receives Service Award

August 05, 2008

Houghton – Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) Interim Executive Director Keith Molin presented an Award of Appreciation for Service to Charlene Kangas executive director of the Baraga County Shelter Home. The award is in recognition of her endless dedication to ending homelessness in Baraga, Houghton and Keweenaw Counties; and her passionate commitment to helping those less fortunate.

“Ending homelessness in Michigan is one of MSHDA’s top priorities,” Molin said “Without the partnership we have with Char Kangas and the commitment of the Baraga, Houghton and Keweenaw Counties Continuum of Care, we could not have achieved the success that we have. We commend all of you for your efforts.”

Director of the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth (DLEG) Keith W. Cooley accompanied Molin as a MSHDA board member and applauded the great strides already made in Marquette.

“No family or child should be left homeless. MSHDA and DLEG are working with several partners to find affordable, safe and clean housing for all Michigan families. Homelessness must end now,” Cooley said.

The Baraga County Shelter Home is a Continuum of Care facility that provides services to victims of Domestic Violence and their families throughout Baraga County and the surrounding area to find shelter. There are 60 Continuum of Care areas serving all 83 counties in Michigan to help serve the more than 79,000 homeless Michigan residents.

This award presentation is part of a tour of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula tour intended to reaffirm MSHDA’s commitment to address homelessness, affordable housing, and homeownership needs for residents throughout the state.

MSHDA is a quasi-state agency that provides financial and technical assistance through public and private partnerships to create and preserve safe and decent affordable housing, engage in community economic development activities, and address homeless issues. MSHDA’s loans and operating expenses are financed through the sale of tax-exempt and taxable bonds and notes to private investors, not from state tax revenues.
